Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim.
Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.
Salam Sejahtera.
- I am delighted to be here this evening. I am proud of the Faculty of Dentistry, University Malaya and I commend them for taking this initiative to organize this conference in oral healthcare for patients with special needs.
- This Conference is a laudable exercise in continuing the professional development of oral care practitioners and in disseminating new information to enhance the quality and delivery of oral health care. More importantly, this Conference is laudable because it places the care of those less fortunate among society at the focal point.
- In any society, there will always be groups of people who have to depend on the community for help to get on with as normal a life as possible. They may be the physically and intellectually disabled, the sick and elderly, families in difficulties, and those without adequate means of livelihood. As neighbours and fellow citizens, we have a duty to step forward to share our time, talent, energy and resources to make a difference in their lives.
- The basic idea of ‘community’ is that human beings are constituted by their relationships. Our dependence upon others is not simply for goods and services. Our sense of well-being and fulfilment has spiritual components such as our innermost relationships with others, with nature and with God. In the real world, the self-contained individual does not exist. Our relationships define our identities. To build a caring community, every one has his or her part to play. Virtually everyone at some point in his or her life will need to be cared for by the community of which he or she is a part.
- Children and adults afflicted with craniofacial and oral deformities are among those who require the community’s care and concern. People with cleft lip and cleft palate are often kept isolated from their communities and suffer alienation by their peers, resulting in poor self esteem and other psychological effects. Many children suffering from these deformities cannot eat properly leading to malnutrition. Children with cleft palates also have recurrent ear infections, which may result in hearing loss. They thus confront not only cosmetic issues, but also hearing, eating, speaking and psychological problems.
- For some patients, comprehensive oral healthcare is inaccessible. The hardware and technology required for treatment can be very expensive – far beyond the financial reach of many patients. I am very happy that the Faculty of Dentistry, University Malaya has initiated the ‘Tabung Kebajikan Pergigian’ to serve those in need of treatment. This effort demonstrates the importance that the Faculty and its members place on serving their community.
- I hope the exceptional efforts by the Faculty to serve the community and to enrich the lives of others will encourage many more to come forward and serve with dedication. My heartiest congratulations for your efforts not only in making ours a healthier society but a more compassionate and caring society.
- I note that there will be experts, both local and international, who will be addressing this conference over these two days. It is my hope that the wealth of experience assembled here is tapped to the optimum. It is also important that what is being shared at this conference is communicated to a wider audience. Public awareness and education eliminate the stigma of human imperfections and serve to create responsibility in thought and action.
- Semoga Konferen ini mencapai kejayaan. Dengan kalimah Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim, Beta sukacita merasmikan “International Conference on Oral Health” dan mengisytiharkan pelancaran “Tabung Kebajikan Pergigian” Fakulti Pergigian, Universiti Malaya.
